Dear Little –
I know there will be a time to talk to you about scary things and bad people. I am relieved in light of what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School on 12/14/12 that you are too young for us to have that conversation.
However, I know that there will be a time and place for that conversation to take place. Your dad and I are going to have to talk to you about things that our parents never had to discuss when we were young people, and the fact that we have to have discussions about violence with you saddens me a great deal.
When we were growing up, there was a man on TV named Mr. Rogers. He brilliantly said something that I would like to share with you:
When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.
There might be a lot of bad things, scary things, and violence in this world – but there are always people there to help. Where there is bad, there is also goodness. Where there is tragedy, there is also a community that pulls together to help make things better. Where there is despair, there is also always a sliver of hope – and people helping.
I love you.
